As warm, syncretic and eclectic as Brazil itself, the Museumnacht evening at the Oude Kerk offers art from Brazil and the Netherlands that deals with the idea of ritual in its most open sense. New, traditional and invented rituals for happy healing and more, make this an evening to listen, feel, see and enjoy. Full Brazilian and Other Rituals is part of the Brazil Festival Amsterdam.
The fantastic gothic architecture of the Oude Kerk is a perfect setting for an evening of rituals. Special to this location is its historical connection with Brazil. The Oude Kerk is the burial site of Adm. Hendrick Lonck whom set out from Holland with 52 ships to take north-east Brazil from the Portuguese in 1630. The product of interest for the Dutch was sugar, the 'white gold' of the time.
During the evening there is work to be seen that is inspired by our contemporary sugar addiction and by the controversial history of the sugar plantations in colonial Brazil with its reliance upon the slave trade. Also in the programme is a performance based on rituals from the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé and an interactive 'happy healing' experience under a 4x4 meter pyramid by the Dutch art collective 'Elektriciteit is Onze Hobby'.
You can also relax, stretch out in the beach chairs by the Praia Bar where 'caipirinhas' and 'pão de queijo' will be served, along with other typical Brazilian drinks and snacks provided by Sabor de Maria. Further, you can get a Brazilian wax or a good fortune soap for bathing rituals. From 00:00 to 02:00, warm up and swing with DJ Neiro and his special Brazilian music collection.
Artists Maurício Ianês, Ayrson Heráclito and Edgar Camargo will be coming from Brazil specially for the Museumnacht 2011 as part of a series of events that support the exchange of ideas between Brazilian and Dutch artists.
